Women’s services offered:
Menopause (Hot flashes, Insomnia, Decrease Libido, Vaginal Dryness, Mood Swings, Urinary problems, etc)
—Menopause is an important transitional time in the lifecycle of every woman; it is a time of drastic biological change. Dr. McNeil understands that health promotion and disease prevention is paramount during this time. Hormone balancing and symptom relief is very important, but quantifying risk and working to prevent serious diseases that plague the aging population is equally important. Dr. McNeil uses concentrated PhytoEstrogens, herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation to prevent diseases such as breast cancer, coronary heart disease, uterine or ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (including Hormone testing if necessary)
— The decision to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is complicated and difficult because research is confusing and conflicting. Dr. McNeil can help evaluate the risks and benefits of both conventional HRT and natural HRT to create a treatment plan right for the individual patient. Some research clearly shows HRT can slightly increase risk of breast cancer, strokes, cardiovascular disease and gallbladder disease. There are important lifestyle strategies that can influence and possibly reduce the risk of these conditions. Dr. McNeil educates her patients on the safest, most effective ways of using HRT.
Well Women’s Exam
—Dr. McNeil spends plenty of time with all her patients during the yearly well women’s visits. A head to toe physical exam will be done along with a clinical breast exam and pap smear. Orders for an EKG, screening chest X-ray, Mammogram, DEXA and/or Colonoscopy will be given as appropriate for each individual patient based on age, family history, and personal disease risk. Cancer prevention, screening and education will be emphasized at this time.
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
—Also known as chronic anovulatory syndrome, PCOS is associated with excessive production of male hormones and insulin resistance. Symptoms can be severe and embarrassing including acne, male pattern hair loss or hair growth, obesity, and irregular or absent menses. Goals of therapy include lowering estrogen and testosterone, inhibit 5-alph reductase (to inhibit the conversion of testosterone to DHT, the more active form of testosterone), modify insulin resistance and induce ovulation. Dr. McNeil is an expert in this multifactorial disease and uses a combination of herbal blends and pharmaceuticals to successfully treat her patients.
—whether the problem is heavy bleeding or irregular bleeding, Dr. McNeil will diagnose and treat the problem. Unfortunately conventional medicine doesn’t have many solutions for this common problem, and women are usually offered the typical Birth Control Pill or surgery. These may not be necessary or appropriate for some women. Dr. McNeil uses powerful herbal medicine combined with diet and lifestyle modification to regulate menstruation and restore normal hormonal function.
Vaginal Infections and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI’s)
—Dr. McNeil has spent years doing community medicine, she has seen any and every sexually transmitted infection. She understands how embarrassing a vaginal infection can be. Dr. McNeil will diagnose, treat, and teach prevention for anything from yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis to gonorrhea and chlamydia. She uses herbal suppositories when appropriate and antibiotics when necessary.
Reproductive Health and Education
—Whether the focus is Conception or Contraception, Dr. McNeil can help. There is nothing more satisfying to Dr. McNeil than wanting and able parents conceiving a healthy baby.
Infertility in women has been the source of much heartache, suffering and medical costs. About 10%-15% of couples experience infertility. 40% is female related, 40% is male related and 20% is unknown. Dr. McNeil will screen for anovulation, hypothyroidism, elevated prolactin, uterine fibroids, adhesions, endometriomas and other masses. Therapy includes correcting ovulatory dysfunction which is a cause in approximately 45% of female related infertility, tonifying the uterus and hormone balancing.
For women wanting to prevent pregnancy there are many different options for birth control including hormonal (oral contraceptive pills, patches and injections), barrier methods (diaphragm, cervical cap, condoms), Intra-Uterine Devices (IUD’s), and behavior methods (periodic abstinence, withdrawal, lactational amenorrhea). Dr. McNeil understands this can be a challenging subject for couples because ideological, spiritual, and religious beliefs are integral in this decision. She will assess the needs of each woman and provide contraception counseling and prescriptions as needed.
Abnormal PAP follow-up (including Colposcopy with Biopsy and treatment)
— An abnormal PAP smear result can be alarming or even scary. Dr. McNeil has years of experience managing the “unhealthy cervix”or cervical dysplasias. Depending on the severity of the situation, she uses a technique of herbal medicine applied directly to the cervix called an “escharotic treatment” to facilitate the sloughing off of unhealthy cervical cells. Unlike the conventional treatments there are no unfortunate side effects, making it a much safer treatment option for women of childbearing age.
—The health of our hair, skin and nails is often a reflection of our general health. Dr. McNeil will analyze the diet, environmental and sun exposures, stressors, and physical health conditions that could be contributing to the unhealthy appearance of her patients. She will offer specific dietary and lifestyle intervention along with vitamins, minerals, herbs and pharmaceuticals to get her patients looking AMAZING!
—Premenstrual Syndrome can be a debilitating condition for some women, it is characterized by cyclic symptoms during the second half of the menstrual phase caused by sudden changes of hormone levels. Symptoms of severe mood swings, lethargy, sleep changes, difficulty concentrating, breast tenderness, headaches, bloating and weight gain can dominate a women’s life making day to day living unmanageable. Testing should be done to rule out thyroid and blood sugar problems and screening for concurrent disorders of depression and anxiety should be done. Dr. McNeil uses a multifactorial approach to treating this syndrome including nutritional intervention, herbal medicine and in some cases bio-identical hormones to relieve symptoms and restore hormone balance.
Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea)
— Menstrual cramps affect over 50% of menstruating women. Sometimes there is no identifiable cause (called primary dysmenorrhea) and sometimes they are caused by pelvic abnormalities like endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids (secondary dysmenorrhea). Dr. McNeil will determine the cause of the dysmenorrhea, she uses strong natural muscle sedatives, nutritional support and pelvic anti-inflammatories to relieve the pain and discomfort from menstrual pelvic and low back pains.
